M. D. Gunasena International School, situated in the heart of Colombo and founded in the year 2000, provides a sound education, proffering both an education in the National Curriculum (English Medium), as well, as International (Cambridge) prospectus.

M. D. Gunasena International School is, steadfastly, following the footsteps of its parent company, M. D. Gunasena, determinedly, continuing its tradition and its labors are in consistency with their proclamation of teaching, ‘The Nation to Read’.

M. D. Gunasena International School has an Elementary Section, a Primary Section, a Lower Secondary Section and a Senior Section. In addition, it is well-resourced with contemporary Computer, Biology, Chemistry and Physics Laboratories, a Swimming Pool, an Auditorium, a library, Dancing, Music and Art rooms and a Sick Bay.

The school also tenders a caring environment where career guidance is provided and proficient counseling services are bequeathed and certified medical care is given to its students.

The school, further, proposes an extensive range of core and extra-curricular activities to its students, such as Athletics, Cricket, Chess, Football, Karate, Swimming, Dancing, Music, Art and Speech and Drama.

M. D. Gunasena International School propounds a low student to teacher ratio of 15:1 and in some instances, as low as 2:1 in the Advanced Level prospectuses.

Individual attention with complimentary, in-house support classes are extended to all its pupils. The syllabi are delivered by a team of industrious, competent teachers. M. D. Gunasena International School, moreover, has produced Edexcel, World Prize winners.

M. D. Gunasena international School, in addition, is an approved Centre for the British Council, Cambridge and Edexcel ICT Practical Examinations, held in the month of May, every year. Furthermore, it is an endorsed Centre for the Institute of Western Music and Speech (IWMS) Examinations.

The School provides adolescents with the opportunity to develop their individual skills while enhancing interactive qualities and group dynamics in them. Special emphasis is placed on the development of sensorial, tactile, mathematical and language skills. During the formative years, the important philosophy of self-discipline and self-motivation is inculcated in students. Besides, M. D. Gunasena International School strongly believes that, an education with an avid focus on Human Values and the increasing need to foster an individual’s social obligation, is its duty when providing a sound, whole education. M.D. Gunasena International School, Muslim students put sweat and forte to make festivities, of other religions, flourish. They take part in Nativity plays and sing Christmas carols, bedeck Christmas trees, create ‘Vesak Pandols’ and decorate the school with lanterns, as well as, play dynamic roles in Hindu rituals and time-honored, classical narrations in primeval vernaculars.

Muslim students have gained much respect and recognition from renowned scholars of the Hindu religion, for outshining as Rama in legendary, theatre productions like the, ‘Ramayana,’ a singularly Hindu doctrine. Pupils of Islam have been momentously celebrated for impressively recounting extracts in ‘Pali’ and ‘Sanskrit’ during Language Day.

Message From The Principal

Welcome to our M.D.Gunasena International school website.  Our school’s purpose is to educate the youth of the world to take their productive place as leaders in the global community by offering our learners a comprehensive education from play class to Year 13. Further a range of sporting and cultural activities are available for students to pursue.

M.D. Gunasena International School is a signatory to the International Student Code of Practice. The presence of international students in our classrooms provides our children with rich cultural experiences and helps prepare them to be members of a global community. We are a caring community where students’ needs are a priority and where traditional Sri Lankan and modern Western educational values are respected and encouraged to coexist.

As the Principal of MDGIS, I am delighted that the school is enriched with experienced and highly skilled and committed staff work collaboratively to deliver quality education to our students.

A very warm welcome to the M.D.Gunasena International School. Ever since our inception in 2000, our mission has always been to provide an outstanding education and inspire students to become tomorrow’s leaders. We encourage students to engage in both academic and enriching extra-curricular programs. Message From The Education Consultant

The M.D. Gunasena International School Curriculum is structured to enable students to reach their full potential in whatever occupational path they may choose, in whichever part of the world. The curriculum is diverse enough to enable students to select their subjects in line with individual interest, within a framework of course requirements.

I suppose true education goes beyond learning books. It is that which shapes one’s character, personality, value system, integrity and humility. Education is that what shapes tomorrow’s leaders.

Education, at its higher levels, is indispensable when it comes to developing wholly a student’s character and his humility. Character should be strong, full bodied and intense and humility ought to be sincere and open. Education should be paired with no other accessory than humility.

Learning never ends ‘until death do us part’. It is an infinite process that molds one and shapes one’s thinking processes. It is the potency of one’s course of thinking that would make one stand apart from the rest.

Gold has to be put to test by being scorched in flames before it is transformed into fine jewelry. The mind too would have to give into inferno before it is shaped into grandeur. That is why, I would claim that higher education is a requisite after formal schooling.

My greatest aspiration as the Education Consultant of M.D. Gunasena International School is to get our students into eminent Universities of the world, like Harvard, and I would like to take the pleasure in wishing all our students the very best in their endeavors.

Message From The Student Counselor

I am very pleased to write this note to briefly explain my role as the school counsellor of this school.

My activities in the school include professional counselling to the students, teachers, other staff members and parents whenever the need for counselling has been identified. In this international school within an urban community with a student population from different nationalities, complex situations are likely to arise that may need careful and cautious guidance. As the counsellor I help the students to understand and overcome social, emotional and behavioural problems in the school and at home by providing individual as well as small group counselling sessions. I also work with students to help them develop skills such as time management, efficient work habits, decision making, problem solving and effective communication. There is a significant need to guide the students to aim for realistic career and academic goals and help them to develop practical support systems to succeed in their educational career.

My professional work in the school also involves providing counselling in particular situations such as substance abuse, school refusal and bullying at school. I also provide counselling to parents of the children attending the school helping them to improve their parenting skills so that they are able to better manage any day to day problems that they may encounter in bringing up their children. Lastly, I would also be available to listen to the students, parents and the teachers whenever it is necessary to provide them with emotional support and help to overcome any difficulties recognised by them so that they will be able to achieve their educational objectives and goals.
