Debating is important at M. D. Gunasena International School. We firmly believe that students should be punctilious in the art of oratory and possess the ability to converse in our National Languages, Sinhala, Tamil and English. A rhetoric contest called, ‘the Debater’ is held every year in all our National Languages to encourage public speaking and bring out the flair for free speaking. An external panel of adjudicators is invited at these formidable occasions to appreciate, recognize and give heed to our young disputants. Our acknowledged debaters have, furthermore taken part in external debating challenges and received much recognition.
We take pride in the Fine Arts, drawing and painting at M. D. Gunasena International School. An Art Exhibition cum an Art Contest is held for the Public each academic year. Other schools are invited to take part in the contest held at the school and a renowned artist is invited to appraise the competition. Exhibits of our pupils will likewise be on display for public viewing at such happenings.
Art students of M. D. Gunasena International School have similarly taken part in public and private Art Competition and not only gained much recognition, but they have obtained many accolades in such occasions. The Art Teacher at M. D. Gunasena International School is qualified with a Higher Diploma in Multi-Disciplinary Design.
The Prefect Investiture is held annually at M. D. Gunasena International School. Prefects act as a bridge between school authorities and pupils. They render a selfless service to the school, maintaining order and respecting the rights of those they lead. We inspire children from a young age to develop qualities indispensable to become prefects. Prefects are chosen with the utmost of assiduousness and rigor to not only develop skills in leadership and responsibility but to play a part in unceasingly improving the discipline of the school. The Investiture is of colossal importance to the school and its pupils, where parents, directors and chief guest are present to honor the occasion.
The Prize Giving is held per annum at M. D. Gunasena International School and is an important part of any academic year. Students are chosen for scholastic prizes based on their academic performance during the three terms of the school year. A high average must be maintained throughout the year, at the end of term examinations in order to be entitled to a prize which is awarded for General Proficiency and individual, academic subjects offered at the school. The Prize Giving is graced by a chief guest of renowned literary reputation.
A school Talent Show is held once, every academic year, to inexorably give students the opportunity to flaunt their talents to the utmost. The Talent Show candidly boasts the talent of all our children from play group to youngsters in Advanced Level classes. Dancing and Music form an integral part of the concert, where students are expressly trained and guided by our dancing and music teachers, to present, to the audience, a dazzling, memorable and highly professional feat. Our youths, in higher grades, initiate and plan their exclusive choreographies and items for the event. The passion that goes into making their compositions, renders their events ingenious and justly entertaining. Our annual, Talent Show is a unique work of performing art, which receives much commemoration and recognition by the spectators and distinguished chief guests who grace the occasion.
Founder’s Day at the school is acclaimed in February, to acknowledge the Birthday of the Founder of the Company M. D. Gunasena and Company Limited, Malagalage Don Gunasena.
A distinctive assembly is conducted on Founder’s Day where students would compile and deliver inspirational speeches with reference to the Founder’s biography.
A Library Week is held every year at M. D. Gunasena International School, to conserve the importance of reading. This week is conscientiously utilized to austerely encourage children to read books, write book reviews, digests, abridgements and synopses of books they read. Students will be awarded for preeminent précises, as incentives, to encourage them further to pursue the mastery of reading. The importance of paper and recycling of books is also an essential highlight during Library Week.
Language Day at M. D. Gunasena International School is held to expound pedagogic skills in languages such as English, Sinhala and Tamil, offered in the school. Pupils are prompted to compose and recite semantic works that are rich in variety and content. The students who demonstrate unsurpassed linguistic and literature skills will be conferred with due recognition. A Muslim student, in the Language Day 2018, adeptly recited, with ease and great poise, a Pali, Sanskrit narration from the ‘Maname` Drama,’ composed by the renowned scholar, Ediriweera Saraschandra. Equally, a young pupil from the Primary Section, effortlessly, presented a chronicle about the celebrated Abdul Kalam. The Language Day is structured by our team of teachers of eminent, collegiate reputation in language and literature such as an M. Phil degree holder. Distinguished scholars, moreover, form an integral part of Language Day and are invited to adjudge the compositions of our students. Language Day has given an impetus to students to win accolades for language and literature in public competitions, such as the Ladies’ College, ‘Sinhala Kala Ulela.’
Teachers’ and Children’s Days
Teachers’ and Children’s Days are celebrated at M. D. Gunasena International School to give acknowledgement and regard to teachers and children. Teachers’ and Children’s Day are happy occasions designed to spread feelings of concord among teachers and children. Teachers and students work in interdependence to make both Teachers’ and Children’s Days a success: Teachers devise programs for children on Children’s Day and students propose agendas for teachers on Teachers’ Day.
School Trips and Educational Excursions
Students from all sections of M. D. Gunasena International School are taken on Educational Excursions during the course of the academic year. Informative expeditions are regarded
as a ‘must’ when it comes to reinforcing instruction in education. The outings are aptly relevant to the topics of study, covered by our students. Pupils, accompanied by teachers, are taken on trips to Nature Reserves, Historical and Geographical areas of importance and places of significance in Sri Lanka.
