National Curriculum, Senior Section

The National Curriculum, Senior Section of M. D. Gunasena International School works together in congruence to support education both in academics and moral values. The National Curriculum is schooled in the English Medium. The National Curriculum Senior Section comprises of grades six to thirteen. Students conclude their National Ordinary Level syllabus in grade eleven and the Local Advanced Level program is accomplished in grade thirteen.

We offer the children, a student oriented, skill based and activity based education through our curriculums. In order to enrich their academic standards, the students are given individual assignments, peer work, presentations and written exercises. The unit end evaluations, monthly tests, worksheets and term tests make students and their parents aware of the progress that each student makes, on a continuous basis. This enables the teachers to closely observe each student’s capabilities and disabilities and respond with promptness. The student to teacher ratio is minimal in the section, thus enabling students to profit from a one-to-one tuition experience with our council of highly competent and experienced graduate teachers. Regular assessments of students are duly followed by compulsory parent teacher interaction days which are held every academic term to create awareness of student progress to their parents.

The Section is not only committed to providing knowledge but it is centered on building strong self-confident, self-supporting and independent characters, through diverse societies, projects and abundant sport and extracurricular activities, while nurturing traditional social values in a multicultural and religious environment. The annual Science Exhibition organized by the National Section gives immense opportunities to students to acquire knowledge and develop and demonstrate their innate, creative talents.

Language is a compulsory subject in the academic syllabus. We conduct three languages in our school, English, Sinhala and Tamil in order to expand language skills and develop the mother tongues of our students, to the best of our ability.

Sinhala and Tamil is developed, intensely, as the first languages and English Language skills are developed in equal status to the mother tongue. We believe that your children will learn English much more effectively if they continue to develop their first language at the same time.

Instructors in the National Curriculum Section are experienced with qualifications such as: M. Phil, B.Sc (Plant Bio-Technology), B. Com, Diploma in Civil Engineering and Quantity Surveying (Advanced), Diploma in AMI Montessori and Pre-School, Diploma in English, Diploma in Teacher Education.
