Lower Secondary Section

The objective of the Lower Secondary Section of M. D. Gunasena International School is a well-intended, preparatory level to meticulously and methodically get students ready for the Cambridge Ordinary Level Examination syllabus in grades nine and ten of the Senior School. The Lower Secondary Section encompasses classes from grades six to eight.

Students in the Lower Secondary Section are groomed, progressively, to acclimate to benchmarks that are set by the Cambridge Board of Education, in order to cope with the more advanced studies they will confront in the Senior Section of the school, explicitly, grade nine and upwards, when they sit for the Cambridge Board of Examinations.

Staffed by a qualified and experienced crew of teachers, the Lower Secondary continues with the Cambridge Syllabus that carries on, congenially, from the Primary section.

Girls and boys study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, ICT, Languages: Sinhala or Tamil and Religion.

English, Mathematics and Science are taught as compulsory subjects at this stage of learning. Students are encouraged, exuberantly, to learn aesthetic disciplines of their choice, Music, Art or Dancing. Games and sports are an integral part of the curriculum as in every section of the school, because M.D. Gunasena International School is sturdily convicted in the credence of, “A sound mind in a sound body.”

Pupils are also given a sound moral upbringing that is in synergy with all disciplines and supplementary activities offered to students.

Experienced Teachers in the Lower Secondary Section are professionally qualified with B.Sc (Business Management), BA (General), Diploma in English, Diploma in TESL.

Supportive Classes and Complementary Tuition is arranged at the discretion of teachers, during after school hours and may take place during weekends and school holidays as well. Care is taken to make sure that the Supplementary Tuition arranged by teachers do not coincide with the Extra-Curricular activities that are offered, after school.
